You Built Your Wealth in One World. You're Retiring Into Another.

The tools that got you here weren't built for the retirement you're about to live. Here's a clearer way to organise it.

You did the hard part. Decades of work, smart decisions, sacrifices most people never make. You've built more than most.

But the decisions ahead are different from the ones that got you here, and they carry more weight. One wrong move now could:

  • Shorten how long your wealth lasts

  • Limit what you can enjoy while you're still healthy

  • Leave you with late-stage regrets you can't undo

Here's the part almost no one says out loud. The assumptions underneath standard retirement planning, the benchmarks, the projections, the age you're supposed to stop, were built for a shorter, steadier, more predictable world. That world's gone. You're ageing into a new one, with tools designed for the old.

That's why I wrote Swimming With Sharks. It hands you the same organising method I use with private clients holding $5 to 15M portfolios, a plain-English way to get your whole financial life onto one page and see clearly what's safe to spend and what needs protecting.

The World Changed. The Plan Didn't.

You may have twenty, thirty, even forty years ahead of you. Most plans are built to last about twenty.

The real risk in retirement isn't running out of money. It's running out of money before you run out of life.

Sit with that for a moment. The idea that retirement begins around 65 was set more than a century ago, in a world where most people didn't live long enough to reach it, and those who did weren't expected to last long after. You're not those people. You'll likely have decades on the other side of that number. It was never built for a life like yours.

So the first question isn't how much you have. It's whether what you have is organised to last as long as you will.

The Old Tools Bet on a Prediction. Real Life Doesn't Cooperate.

Standard retirement planning runs on a single prediction. A neat line on a chart, climbing steadily, year after year.

Real life doesn't move in a straight line. Markets fall. Inflation bites. Health changes. Legislation shifts. The honest question isn't what the prediction says. It's what breaks first in your plan if the next decade goes badly, and whether you'd see it coming in time to do anything about it.

No one can predict the next thirty years. A plan that depends on getting the prediction right is fragile by design. A plan built to hold up whatever the next decade brings is something else entirely. That shift, from predicting to preparing, is the difference between a clever guess and a plan you can rely on.

Why the Worry Never Quite Goes Away

There's another reason the doubt hangs around, even when the numbers look fine.

Your financial life is almost certainly being managed in pieces. An accountant here, an adviser there, maybe a lawyer for the estate. Each one good at their part. None of them looking at the whole.

No single person is responsible for how the pieces fit together. The cash flow decision has tax consequences no one flagged. The estate structure limits what's safe to spend, and nobody mentioned it. The gaps between your advisers are exactly where the real risk lives, and no one's standing in them.

The Cost You Feel Every Day

So even with everything in place, you hesitate.

You can afford the trip. You haven't booked it. You could help the kids now. You're waiting. Not because the money isn't there, but because you can't see clearly enough what saying yes will cost you later.

That hesitation has its own price, and it's steeper than it looks. The best years of retirement aren't spread evenly across it. They tend to come early, while health and energy are still on your side. Every year spent watching life cautiously from the sidelines is a year you don't get back.

These years are also less forgiving than the ones that built your wealth. When you were earning, a wrong move could be recovered. There was time. Now the same move costs more and leaves less room to fix it. Bad retirement outcomes rarely arrive as a single dramatic collapse. They add up over time, through small decisions made without a clear view, until the options you once had are simply gone.

The Difference Independence Makes

Most financial advice is built to keep someone else paid. Commissions, product targets, fees tucked where you won't look. Even advice that calls itself independent often isn't, once you trace where the money actually goes.

I've spent my career on the other side of that line. No commissions. No products. Nothing to sell you but my thinking. It's why I co-founded the Profession of Independent Financial Advisers and helped create the Gold Standard of Independence, to hold advice in this country to a higher mark.

That independence is the reason the method in this book can be trusted. It was built to serve one interest. Yours.

A Clearer Way to See the Whole Picture

The answer isn't more information. You've had plenty of that. The answer is a different kind of plan.

I call it the Independent Planning-for-Results Method. It's the same organising process I use with private clients, and it does three things the old tools don't:

  • It brings all five parts of your financial life, cash flow, wealth, tax, estate and risk, onto a single page, so nothing falls through the gaps between advisers.

  • It looks at the best, worst and most likely outcomes instead of banking on one straight-line prediction, so you're planning for real life, not a single guess.

  • It gives you a plain way to think about what's safe to spend and what needs protecting, so you can make decisions with confidence instead of guesswork.

No jargon. No sales pitch. Just a clearer view of where you stand and what to do next.

Picture This

Andrew and Melissa's story.

Andrew and Melissa had spent years trying to get their finances organised. They'd seen multiple advisers, paid thousands in fees, and still felt like they were spinning their wheels.

"We have tried connecting with a number of financial advisors, just to be disappointed with expensive fees and no results. Feeling like we've gone backwards."

Once they stepped into the process, that cycle broke. The pieces finally sat on one page. Options they hadn't seen came into view, a clear path emerged, and for the first time they felt genuine peace of mind about their future.

The $8M couple's story.

Another couple I worked with were already retired, with more than $8 million in assets. On paper, they looked bulletproof. But every decision came back to the same worry:

"If we take that big trip now, what if we regret it later?"

When we mapped out what was safe to spend and what needed protecting, everything shifted. They booked the trip. They helped their daughter with a home deposit. And they stopped second-guessing themselves.

That's what clarity does. It turns hesitation, before or after retirement, into confidence and freedom.

Proof From Readers Like You

I also believe you have thought more deeply about these subjects than most financial advisers. I particularly found your Value Chain exercise useful, to revalidate what I see my purpose being.

— John, Melbourne, VIC

I’ve found your approach both different and refreshing. The way you laid out the fundamentals — like the ‘house with five rooms’, the timeline of family, and the ‘must-haves’ — gave us real clarity and direction. The workbook has been a valuable companion. Overall SWS has been a refreshing, low-cost tool that took a different approach than I had anticipated, in a good way.

— Ian & Jackie, Kew, VIC

This was a structured way to discuss things we don’t tend to discuss. We’re both on the same page now. Transformational.

Why Listen to Me

For more than 30 years I've guided families with $5 to 15M portfolios through every market cycle, legislative shift and industry fad.

I wrote the books: Swimming With Sharks and Shattering the Crystal Ball Myth. Across decades of work, I've seen what actually helps families retire with confidence, and what leaves them second-guessing for years.

Thirty years. Two books. Hard-won lessons. What I've learned, I've put in these pages, so you can benefit from it without the noise and the guesswork.

A New World Deserves a Plan Built for It

You did the hard part. You built the wealth, made the smart calls, put in the decades. The only thing missing is a plan made for the world you're actually retiring into, rather than the one your tools were designed for.

Retirement keeps circling back to the same three questions:

  • Will it last?

  • Am I missing opportunities?

  • Am I missing opportunities?

Swimming With Sharks gives you a clear way to answer them, starting with what's safe to spend, so you can enjoy more now, without fear or regret later.

Let's make your one shot at retirement count.
